Bubonic Plague

Questions:

1. In 1900, people did not know how the bubonic plague was spread. What did officials do to try to stop the spread of disease?
In 1900 for the officials to try and stop the bubonic plague to spread on Angel Island they checked the immigrants before they came into the mainland. If the immigrants would even have the slightest sickness they would either be sent back home, or sent into quarantine. Health inspectors were also worried that foreigners would bring in the plague. The ship in Angel Island is quarantined by bacteriologists, Joseph Kinyoun. Joseph thought that the plague bacteria was spread from person to person. So he decided to quarantine mostly Asian passengers and the crew. He also thought that dirt was a part of the plague bacteria spreading, so he fumigated the ship. They put a big chain around China town since one merchant had the plague and they wanted to keep from the white community getting the disease. They also fumigated houses, and destroyed the worst of the slums.
2. a. Draw a diagram showing how the bubonic plague is spread.
Diagram: Bubonic Plague:
1. Fleas were biting diseased rats.
2. The fleas then transmitted the plague bacteria when they bit the humans, since their saliva had plague bacteria in it.
3. Then the humans get sick with the bubonic plague disease and either died or recovered.

b. Identify the vector of this disease.
The vector are the fleas and there bites.
3. By 1906, officials knew how the bubonic plague was spread. What did they do this time to stop the spread of disease?
By 1906 the public health officials started targeting rats instead of people to stop the spread of disease. They also had places where they received rats.
4. a. Malaria, a disease particularly common in Africa, is caused by a tiny germ known as Plasmodium. When a female mosquito bites a person infected with malaria, she sucks up Plasmodium along with the blood. When she bites a healthy person, germs in her saliva infect that person. What is the vector in this case?
The vector is the female mosquito.

b. Now that you know the vector of malaria, suggest two ways that the spread of malaria could be reduced or prevented.
1. One way that Malaria could be reduced is not have female bugs bite you- so put some insect repellent.
2. The second way that Malaria could be reduced is getting blood tests or other tests once in a while to make sure that you don't have Malaria. If you do and it is very strong then maybe go into quarantine, or if it isn't that mild then get some medicine from your doctor.
