How Do You Solve a Problem?

In class we focused on problem solving. To practice problem solving and learn different strategies, we had to solve three different problems: Save Fred, the chop stick challenge, and all aboard...

The problem in "Saving Fred" was that Fred's boat flipped over, and he luckily managed to stay on the top of the boat, but his life preserver is stuck under the boat. We had to get the life preserver from under the boat, then put it on fred, only using 4 paper clips! The strategies we used to solve this problem, is very simple, but it worked. All we did was to make a plan on how to get the life preserver from underneath the boat. After doing that we just tried different ways, and if we failed we would try a different way.

The next experiment that we did called the chop stick challenge, had a simple problem. The problem was that we had to build in a four person group a 1cm cubed based tower, using chop sticks, without having it break. The strategy that we used was very different from the other groups, but that was okay, because we still won the challenge. Our strategy that we used was: we first made a really bad plan, but it didn't work. So we came up with a new one; to have everybody build their own tower, and if one tower broke, then we would try to build the other towers remaining.

The last problem that we had to solve, was a disaster! It is called "All Aboard", we use one medium sized table, turn it up side down, (to become a "boat"), then the whole class has put at least put on foot and most of their body weight on the boat! Our class had NO strategy at all. All we did was scream at each other, and everybody kept on trying to do their own thing. Next time, if we ever get to do this again, we should ALWAYS make up a plan first, because this time it was just to loud and busy, so we didn't get anywhere.

Dancing or Swimming???

In P.E. I have make a blog post on what I consider fun excersize and why. This is what I like...

The first sport that I consider fun is swimming. I have loved it since I was a baby till today. I also really love the fact that it is in the water, so you can cool your self down, especially in Singapore, because it is so hot! Also you can do many cool tricks underwater which are really hard to do on land. That's I love swimming!

I also really love dancing, because it makes me feel happy. I enjoy moving to the beats of a song, and when I start, I don't wanna stop. Dancing can also benifit some things like, it helps you gain confidence. In dancing you can also express your self, there are no limits in dancing. That's why I like dancing!

Making Plastic Milk

For extra credit I decided to do an experiment where I got to make plastic milk. This experiment was interesting, and I thikn you'll like it...

For this experiment I needed:
- One cup of milk
- 4 teaspoons of white vinegar
- A bowl
- A strainer
- Adult help

First I gathered all my materials, and put them on the table. Then I poured exactly one cup of milk into the measuring cup.

Then I poured the milk into a bowl, and my mom boiled the milk for about 3-5 minutes. It is very important that the milk is hot, but not boiling.

After it was done boiling, I added four teaspoons of vinegar to the milk.

Then I stired the mixture slowly, for about 3-5 minutes. I had to make sure it was done perfectly.
This is how it looked when I was done stirring the milk.

Then after I finished stirring the milk, it was time for me to pour the mixture into the strainer.

After, all the extra liquid went through the strainer, I was left with the mass of lumpy blobs.

Then I poured the mass of the lumpy blobs into a bowl.

Then the fun part came... I was supposed to mold the mass of the lumpy blobs it into shape, and within a few days would harden!
